A credit rating is used to categorise customers in very broad terms of their creditworthiness. 1 star reflects a very weak credit score, and is often referred to as 'sub prime'. A 5 star credit rating applies to those with a very low risk of defaulting. Most people fall in the 3 star credit rating category- the average.
Your credit score is your credit report boiled down to one number. A credit score is a statistical measure of your creditworthiness, on a range of 0-1000 where 0 is awful and 1000 is excellent. The average credit score is 750 out of 1000.
In simple terms, your credit score directly relates to the probability that you will successfully maintain the credit that you are applying for.
To be competitive on interest rates, a lender is likely to need to know how much risk they are taking on, so will only lend to customers who score more than a certain credit score - known as a 'cut off score'. They will automatically accept those applicants who have credit scores in excess of their determined cut-off score, and will decline all others.
Different lenders have different cut-off scores, and can vary them depending on how hungry they are for new business, and how much risk they are prepared to take.
Credit cards are a handy and safer alternative to carrying around cash. But it can be a hard choice choosing the credit card that’s for you.
If you settle your outstanding balance each month, then you will benefit from a rewards credit card, earning airmiles or cashback from day-to-day purchases.
If you don't clear the balance in full each month, then you’ll pay interest, so look for the cheapest card with the lowest monthly fee to keep your monthly costs down.
If you know your credit rating, select it by hovering your mouse over the panel to the right and clicking on the appropriate rating. If you don’t know your credit rating, click the button to calculate it for free. This will match up your rating with lender appetite to give you the best chance of success with your application.

One of the longest serving credit card providers in South Africa, American Express has expanded to offer a wide range of credit cards. If you have an annual income of over R300 000 and have an excellent credit rating, then you could well be accepted for the Platinum card. Benefits include the American Express Membership Rewards Programme, where 1 point can be redeemed for every R5 spent to use for lifestyle and travel rewards. An added bonus of the point’s scheme is that the points never expire. You will also be offered an excellent debit interest rate but as like all American Express cards they are not always accepted by every retailer.
The Gold card lets you get more from your credit card. Both the American Express Membership Rewards and the American Express Selects programme are included meaning you can earn 1 point for every R5 spent. This can then be redeemed for a variety of lifestyle and travel rewards. If you're a frequent traveller you will also be able to take advantage of earning great discounts locally and internationally just for being a gold member. As like all American Express cards you will have the option to transfer a balance upon account opening and have payment protection for an outstanding balance up to R150 000 if the worst were to happen to the primary cardholder.
This is American Express's entry level card but does not mean you miss out on any of their fantastic benefits. Although you will receive a lower credit limit, you will still be rewarded for spending on your card by earning 1 point for every R5 spent. An added bonus with these points is that they never expire, so they can easily be accumulated and be redeemed against a variety of lifestyle and travel rewards. The card is a perfect way to budget for those larger purchases allowing you to spread payments of R300 or more over 3 to 36 months. A perfect first reward card for only R20 per month.
The main benefit of the SAA Voyager Gold card is that you will earn one air mile for every R6,50 spent. For your first flight ticket purchase you will earn an extra 10,000 bonus miles which is the equivalent to a domestic Economy Class Mileage Keeper Award. Although a great bonus for a first purchase, these are subject to limited seat allocations and it is unlikely that these will be redeemable during busy periods such as holidays or weekends. You will also have to pay taxes and surcharges for any flights that are booked using the air miles. But despite this, if the card is used wisely as like the SAA Voyager Premium credit card, these are the best air mile cards available.
The Premium SAA Voyager card offers similar rewards to its Gold counterpart earning you 1 air mile for every R6 spent and a further 19,000 bonus miles for your first SAA ticket purchase. This card would seem a perfect choice for those who travel a lot, but earning the miles by using your card is not really that cost effective due to the large annual service charge of R1 835. You will also need to remember that fees and taxes are not included when you redeem your air miles for your complimentary flight, so you may find that it works out to be more expensive than buying a normal ticket from another airline. The air miles do last up to 3 years however so from frequent use these could easily be accumulated for a free flight in the future.
Barclaycard was originally launched back in 1966 and is now the largest credit card company in the World. Although this credit card doesn't offer you rewards similar to that of its rivals for the R35 monthly fee, you are however given up to 57 days' interest free credit – longer than most provider's and also a budget facility for those larger purchases which can be repaid in instalments of 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 or 48 months. A single flat monthly service fee and free transactions make budgeting a breeze with this card.
Depending on your credit profile and monthly income, applicants could be granted a higher personalised credit limit upon successful application. As like other Premier cards the annual fee is around R650 but you will still receive the fantastic FNB benefits such as the eBucks reward scheme of earning up to 2% back on all day-to-day shopping and up to 15% back on fuel purchases. All purchases made within the first 55 days' will be interest free as long as they are fully settled by the payment due date and all till point transactions are free. Unlike other cards offered you will also have exclusive access to SLOW lounges, giving you a wide range of benefits to enjoy before your flight.
FNB offer a fantastic rewards scheme on all of its cards with up to 1.5% being earned back in eBucks on purchases. The card also comes with a personalised credit limit up to R60 000. It is also worth mentioning that customers who qualify for the eBucks reward scheme can receive further great benefits and can then spend the points on just about anything at the various eBucks in-store and online partners. This is a great value card packed with rewards all for a reasonable monthly fee.
If you earn more than R7 000 per month then this is one of the best reward credit cards available to you. The eBucks reward system is fantastic as they can be spent at a number of eBucks partners and unlike other rewards schemes, the eBucks points earned never expire. Successful applicants will also benefit from no transaction fees on purchases and up to 55 days' interest free credit. Upon completing the application, depending on what you earn and your credit worthiness, a tailored rate will be applied. A great card to hold for emergencies and day to day purchases.
The Kulula credit card offers its own unique reward scheme allowing individuals to earn 'Moolah' for each purchase made using the card. For every Rand spent you will earn 1 Moolah point. Unlike the British Airways Avios points, you can let the Moolah accumulate to pay for the full flight fare including both taxes and even VAT. If you don't have enough to pay for the whole flight, then you will still be able to pay the remainder using your card. One drawback however is that the points accumulated need to be used within 6 months of being issued. So if you're not a frequent flyer then these points could simply go to waste.
This is Nedbank's prestigious credit card. Although similar to the Gold card in terms of benefits, the Nedbank Platinum card comes with a generous credit limit which can be increased upon approval.
